Hello everyone! This past week I've been researching on making your own beauty products at home.
One of the first things that came to mind was toothpaste. I've seen many other zero waste bloggers attempt this so I thought I would give it a try.
I've tried a store bought toothpaste that claimed to be zero waste. I loved that they were a Canadian company selling toothpaste in glass jars with multiple flavors to choose from. However, it did not make my fresh breath last long. I wanted to find my own alternative that worked.
When you buy toothpaste from a well-known brand they most likely contain some ingredients that you do not know how to pronounce! Along side that many store bought toothpastes contain micro beads, which is a plastic that has broken down into a fine particle. These beads are dangerous because they travel down your sink drain and eventually end up in the water supply, harming wildlife. When you make your own, it does not have to contain any of these harmful ingredients. A great thing about making your own products is that you know exactly what is in them.
This recipe is super quick and easy, you probably have almost all the ingredients in your home! It makes your mouth feel very fresh, and clean.
To begin you will need a reusable container (I up-cycled a glass jar), baking soda, coconut oil, and essential oils (which are optional).
Zero Waste Toothpaste Recipe:
3 TBSP Coconut Oil
1 1/2 tsp Baking Soda
15 drops Spearmint (Optional)
3 drops Clove (Optional)
Combine all the ingredients until it has reached a smooth, paste consistency. Store in a reusable container. You can add more essential oils as you desire. Enjoy!
Thanks for joining me!
